Abhyanga (Massage )

Swedana (Steam treatment)

Induction of sweating for therapeutic purpose is referred by the name of swedana in Ayurveda This may be used either for promotion of health or curing the illness.  The procedure that  the improve  the body complexion, relieves sense of heaviness, and remove cold is called swedana.

These effects are achieved by increasing the natural process of perspiration. Sweat is a form of waste. According to ayurveda, sweat is produced during the metabolism of medas or adipose tissues, and this sweat has considerable role in maintenance of proper balance of body fluids. The process of sweating also involves eliminations of waste and toxins from the body. These natural functions of the sweat are utilized for the therapeutic purpose in the swedana procedure, swedan is a form of treatment employed to cure specific disease or to relive symptoms like pain, stuffiness or contracture that may manifest as a symptom in different diseased conditions.


Shirodhara is continuous pouring of decoction, oil or other herbal liquid on the forehead. Allowing to it to flow over to scalp, this is popularly know as shirodhara (pouring of oil is not followed by any massage).

Duration and course of Shirodhara

  • 30 to 60 minutes
  • Daily continuos 5 or 10 days.
  • Pouring of Ayurvedic Oil on forehead.
  • Shirodhara is oilation of head for sirovirechan, i.e. panchakarma procedure ( detoxification of head).


Inducing heat  by heated pack of specific fresh herbal leaves is known as “Patra-Pinda-Sweda

Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda

This rice is used in procedure and hence the name Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda. Shashtika shali refers to the rice that grows in 60 days.

This is also popularly known as Navarakizhi. Inducing perspiration by using heated round packs of rice and special herbs according to body needs, which is prescribed by Ayurveda doctor, is referred as Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda.

The whole body below the neck or a portion of the body is subjected to the swedana therapy.

This is an effective and easy procedure of swedana and ideal for healthy person. in children and in clients suffering from illness dueto morbid vata dosha.

Kati Basti 

There are several types of basti treatments like Kati Basti, Hradaya Basti, Nabhi Basti, Greeva Basti, Janu Basti and Siro Basti.
